9318
The digital fashioned body performs in its anatomical form,
Posthuman.
Posthuman.
Procedurally generated skins emerge from the digital body
confounding the codified layers of fashion.
confounding the codified layers of fashion.
Voronoi Lace,
Particles that Shroud the body,
Digital Body becomes Dress. Dress becomes Body.
9318 gets its title from the story of a woman whose body was converted into a high resolution 3D digital body for medical research as part the ‘Visible Human Project’. 9318 is homage to the posthumanity of this body, not representationally, but in its inscription and incorporation (Hayles 1999) from actual, physical matter into digital materiality - and told poetically through the medium of fashion performance.
The animation unfolds in a mesmerising triptych, to a re-arranged version of Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626 recorded with visceral soprano, piano and a string quartet in Cape Town, South Africa. Simulated cloth conceals and reveals the body in its anatomical form; black lace, a cultural signifier of passage between realms. In the second and third parts of the triptych, a chrysalis state is enacted as biological signifier of transformation. Procedurally generated skins emerge from the digital body, confounding the codified layers of fashion - Voronoi Lace; movement that become particles, digital textile... 9318 was made with the support of RMIT University and Grimshaw Architects and has shown as a public work on large digital screen contexts in Melbourne (2022) and Hobart, Tasmania (2023).
